Stärken: The strong and controllable motion of the Shooting Star is its biggest selling point. Players who have higher rev rates will be able to throw a sanded ball without it burning up or over—hooking.

Schwächen: Dry heads are the only thing that could slow the Shooting Star down. The 2000 Abralon finish will lose its energy and hitting power as the front of the lane burns up.

Insgesamt: The strong core and strong, dull coverstock make the Shooting Star the biggest hooking ball in the Shield line of products. The last sanded ball in this line was the Riot.

Comments: The Shooting Star is a new take on a proven winner. The cover is a strong solid reactive resin, which creates the friction necessary for both medium and oily patterns. The Shooting Star core utilizes the same RG and a medium differential Neutron core that is in the previous ball in the Sword line. For the first time, Roto Grip uses a new sanding process of 360 Abralon covered by a 2000 Abralon on the Shooting Star. Tweener and Cranker found the ball to be the most useful on our heavy oil pattern. At this price point, that is a rarity. Their rev rates gave the Shooting Star a strong midlane reaction, allowing them to have more success on the heavy oil pattern compared to Stroker. Stroker’s best look was on the medium test pattern. l-lis lower rev rate allowed the Shooting Star to be a little cleaner through the front on the medium pattern. Both Tweener and Cranker were able to get to the hole rather easily from deeper angles but they didn’t have as much miss room as Stroker had. On both of these patterns all three testers saw the ball pick up strongly in the midlane with a strong continuation through the back end. On the dry pattern all three testers need some surface adjustments in order to get the Shooting Star to the pocket on a consistent basis. We added Storm’s Reacta Shine to all three test balls, which gave us a much better reaction on this pattern. The Shooting Star would not be our first choice for this pattern, but the surface adjustment at least gave us the option of using it on this short, low volume condition. Our reaction on the sport pattern was much better than we have with most balls we test at this price point. The sanded box finish on the Shooting Star allows it to use enough energy in the front to smooth the transition down lane. That type of reaction is what makes it work so well on flatter conditions.
