Stärken: What we like about this ball the most was the amount of performance it offers for the price. We’ve seen this out of Roto Grip’s big brother company and the trend has crossed over.

Schwächen: The Rising Star will struggle on extremely wet or dry conditions. cover doesn’t provide enough traction in the heavy stuff It will also overreact on short and dry patterns.

Insgesamt: The Rising Star is best suited for medium patterns. It offers easy length for all styles of play. Higher rev rates will see more midlane reaction than lower rev rates, while the lower rev rates will experience more energy retention at the back end of the lane.

Comments: The Rising Star is a new ball in the Shield line of Roto Grip products. This line features the Photon core, which has been tweaked in this release. The modilication has lowered the RG and raised the Diff from the version found in the Riot and Dark Star. The cover is a new version of Ultra Vision that is a hybrid. We found this core/cover combination to match up best with our medium test pattern. For Cranker, the Rising Star read the midlane extremely well with a strong arcing motion at the back end. Tweener and Stroker experienced more skid through the front with a much stronger move at the back. Usually Cranker is the one who sees the most recovery, but not this time. The wet test pattern forced all three testers much closer to the ditch. The 1500 grit polish finish doesn’t offer enough traction for this type of pattern. We could get the ball to the pocket, but not at the correct angle to get the corners out consistently. On the dry pattern we definitely would need much weaker layouts. The Rising Star picked up the lane too early on this pattern with the layouts we used. We wouldn’t recommend this ball to be the iirst out of the bag on sport type patterns. The polished finish creates too much skid in the oil and too much reaction in the dry for this type of condition. Surface adjustments would help overcome this but, like the dry pattern, we feel that smoother layouts and surface adjustments are a must on these types of patterns.
