Stärken: The control off the dry is what will be appreciated most by those choosing to use the Grenade. This is a perfect choice for those who have trouble controlling the breakpoint with their resin equipment.

Schwächen: Those choosing to use this ball on oily conditions better have an extremely slow balls speed. The characteristics of a urethane ball require sufficient dry at the back end of the lane in order to create the necessary entry angle to carry, so use, this one appropriately.

Insgesamt: The Grenade is the first urethane ball that Roto Grip has released in several years. Urethane balls make up a small percentage of the market but serve a purpose for those bowling on lower volume patterns where resin balls become uncontrollable.

Comments: This new release from Roto Grip joins the Riot and Dark Star in their Shield line. The Grenade uses the Photon core, which was recently used in both the Riot and Dark Star. The difference between this new one and the other two is the shell. With this new release, Roto Grip went with a weaker approach in cover technology. By using their new Retrothane cover, Roto Grip has created a perfect choice for short and drier lane conditions. We found the Grenade to match up best with our drier test pattern. The lower volume of oil on this shorter pattern allowed the Grenade to perform at its best. All three testers were able to start much closer to the track area than they are used to with today’s reactive resin covers. The smooth transition off the dry gave each tester miss room both inside and outside of their intended target. Finding the pocket was never a problem with the Grenade, Of course, the hitting power isn’t the same as with a resin ball, but we would much rather shoot single pin spares than some ofthe designer splits we see with today’s high performance covers. When we moved over to the medium test pattern, we found ourselves once again playing extremely close to the oil line, which is impossible with today’s high performance balls. The only trouble we found was the length of this pattern didn’t create the necessary entry angle most of the time. The oily test pattern didn’t offer anything for any of our testers. Even Cranker had to make sure he kept his ball speed down with this one. Those bowling on oily patterns will need to add a touch more surface to create more friction with the lane. Sport patterns on the drier side will offer the best look when using the Grenade. The control this new release offers will be perfect on tougher patterns where the scoring pace is lower.
