Stärken: Hook, hook, hook, and more hook. The Defiant’s ability to make heavy volume patterns look like a THS is its biggest asset. Rev-challenged bowlers now have a ball that will chew through the heaviest volumes of oil.

Schwächen: The few flaws ofthe Defiant are the same as its strengths. This ball is so strong that, as the lane dries up, it will spend its energy too quickly. Because this ball is so strong so early, carrydown can become an issue with an incorrect surface.

Insgesamt: Roto Grip has brought the Royal line from its overseas product line to the United States market. The first offering in the Defiant gives us more hook than any previous Roto Grip ball.

Comments: The Defiant is the first in a new line of bowling balls for Roto Grip. The new Royal line is a line that Roto Grip has used on overseas releases and now they are bringing it to domestic markets. This core/cover combination creates the most overall hook we have seen from Roto Grip. In our testing, we found the Defiant to match up best with our heavy test pattern. Stroker, Tweener, and Cranker all had a terrific overall reaction while this pattern was fresh. Stroker’s ball reaction got even better as the session progressed due to the oil breaking down. The Defiant carved up our heavy test pattern for all three testers. Throughout the testing session, the Defiant just got stronger and stronger. The ball did not slow down as the oil carried to the back end or as oil settled on the shell. The medium test pattern offered a reaction that forced all three testers to move at least an arrow or more deeper into the oil to find the pocket. We used a coat of Storm’s Step 2 compound on the cover to get the Defiant to push farther down the lane. This was the proper adjustment as all three testers saw noticeably more push through the heads, allowing for more angle at the back end. None ofthe testers had much of a look on the dry pattern. The Defiant was just flat out too strong for the shorter pattern. Even when we raised the cover to a 4000 Abralon and Storm’s Reacta Shine polish was added, only Stroker and Tweener could keep the ball on the right side of the headpin. Our sport pattern offered a good reaction for all three testers with the Defiant. The sanded finish ofthe ball gave the testers a strong, controllable reaction on the flatter pattern. The Defiant is strong enough to simply overpower a lot of different oil patterns.
