Stärken: The engine inside the Taboo Spare is its biggest benefit. When this ball gets to the pocket, watch out.

Schwächen: This ball needs a lot of friction for most users to sec much hook out of it. Throw it on super short, lighter volume patterns and broken down patterns on beat up surfaces.

Insgesamt: Hammer has gone outside the box and is offering the Taboo Spare for buyers who purchase the Taboo Blue/Silver. With the Taboo Spare, Hammer now has performance balls in polyester, urethane, and reactive coverstocks.

Comments: The new Taboo Spare is a ball that is sure to spark interest. Hammer has taken the Gas Mask core and inserted it into a brightly colored polyester coverstock. With such a low friction polished veneer, it is no surprise we had the best match up on our dry test pattern. When this pattern is fresh, there is plenty of back end friction to get the Taboo Spare back to the pocket. As you can tell by the DigiTrax, even with clean back ends, Stroker and Tweener were still playing very close to the head pin. When they gave the ball room to the right, there wasnt enough traction created by the cover to give them the recovery needed to hit the pocket consistently. Cranker was able to play a small swing shot to start on this pattern, but as the session went on, the carrydown forced him to square up and close his angles through the heads. Once this transition took place, Tweener and Stroker had better luck moving further right and aiming directly at the pocket. Because the core in the ball does create Hare, their carry was surprisingly high from this type of angle. lf we were testing on an older surface or a wood surface, we think we would have had more room for error with the Taboo Spare as our strike ball. Our remaining three patterns all were too long and too wet for the Taboo Spare at its box finish. Stroker and Tweener went all the way down to a 500 Abralon Hnish to get a little added Hare and hook on the medium test pattern, but even then they did not have recovery to the right unless they lowered their velocity to an uncomfortably slow speed. Cranker had a slightly better reaction than the other testers because of his higher rev rate, but still didnt see much overall motion. The combination of volume and a low friction lane surface were too much for the polyester cover to overcome. The Taboo Spare has no reason to go down the lane on heavily oiled patterns unless it is being used as a spare ball or you forgot all your other equipment. The only way any of the testers could strike on the heavy pattern was to point it off the corner. Use this one for what it was designed for, to achieve improved carry when even the Blue Hammer hooks too much.
