Stärken: What we like most about the Black Widow Sting is that it keeps the tradition of a strong midlane read, combined with a ton of continuation at the back end, for which the Black Widow series has been known.
Schwächen: Balls that are as strong as the Black Widow Sting will always struggle on the short and dry stuff. Polishing will help increase the length, which will be necessary for some on medium conditions, but it won't be enough for dry lane conditions.
Insgesamt: The Black Widow Sting offers the traction in the oil of the Bite, with the strong reaction at the breakpoint and back end that the Black Widow Pearl offered. Just think of the original on "juice."
Comments: The Black Widow Sting is the newest and strongest Black Widow ball from Hammer. This ball uses the same Gas Mask core as all of the previous Widows. The difference between the Sting and the others is in the cover. This one uses a 2000 Abralon finished Violent Flip Reactive cover. The box finish gives the Sting traction in the oil, while the core/cover combination gives it the same strong midlane read as the others, with a super strong breakpoint and back end reaction for a dull finished ball. All three of our testers found the Sting to match up best with our heavy oil pattern, which is considered to be long as well. The Sting had no trouble creating enough traction on this pattern. The length of this oil pattern created a bit of hang area to the outside of the pattern, which the Black Widow Sting had no trouble fighting through. The box finish of the Sting was too much for both Cranker and Tweener. Stroker could find the pocket, but his lower rev rate caused him to leave some weak corner pins. We raised the box finish to 4000 Abralon, which gave all three the necessary length for this pattern, while allowing it to store plenty of energy for the back end. The Violent Flip Reactive cover at the finish is super strong at the 2000 Abralon box finish, so you can imagine how much stronger it is down lane at 4000 Abralon. Higher rev rates with a smoother cover will need to be careful not to send this ball to the dry too early. The dry pattern was simply too short for a ball of this caliber. Weaker layouts will be a must, but we suggest something along the line of a Vibe for this type of pattern. The sport pattern offered a decent reaction for all three testers with the box finish. Smoother transitioning layouts should make the Black Widow Sting an excellent choice on medium-to-oily sport patterns.
