Stärken: The core/cover combination is this ball's biggest strength. The weaker reactive pearl, combined with the high RG-low diff cover allows this ball to get down the lane and be very controllable.
Schwächen: Lane conditions with higher volumes of oil will force this ball to stay in the bag. Lower rev rates will need to stick to drier conditions unless they have really slow ball speed.
Insgesamt: The Smash is a perfect choice for drier lane conditions when control is a must. Its easy length and controlled transition from the wet to the dry makes this an easy choice for when the lanes are hooking.
Comments: The Smash and Boom are this year's Bash and Clash in the Bronze Performance category for Ebonite. Smash uses the Phazed Bomber Reactive cover, which is the same cover that was used on Clash. This cover provides the old school reactive look on the lanes. The core is the same as well, with some density changes to increase the RG and lower the overall flare potential. The change to the core allows the Smash to push down the lane easier and change directions smoother. We found the Smash to match up best with our drier test pattern. The length was perfect for this pattern, which is slightly shorter, with less volume than the typical house shot. Carrying the corners was never a problem on this pattern since there is plenty of friction down lane. Lane patterns with a higher volume of oil, like our medium and oily patterns, will cause the Smash to hit a little weak. We were able to get to the pocket on the medium pattern, but had difficulty creating the right entry angle to knock all ten down. Those with higher rev rates will have the best chance on patterns similar to our medium test pattern. Smash struggled quite a bit on our oily test pattern. It wasn't only the volume that gave Smash trouble, but the length of this pattern didn't let it read early enough. Sport patterns on the drier side will offer the best chance for the Smash. Even then, there will be very little recovery down lane, due to the low flare potential of the Smash. Balls with this weak of a core/cover combination should be kept in the bag for their intended lane condition.
