Stärken: The sanded pearlized coverstock is the biggest strength of the Omen. The cover creates traction without sacrificing a continuous motion through the back end.
Schwächen: Lower volumes of oil will have bowlers removing the Omen from the rack quickly. Weak layouts and heavy coats of polish are needed for using the Omen on drier oil patterns.
Insgesamt: The Omen is earlier and smoother than the Ransom Demand. This new release creates an earlier smoother option compared to the previous balls in this price point.
Comments: The Omen is the hrst in a new product line up in Columbia 300’s upper mid performance line. This ball uses a new symmetrical core instead ofthe asymmetrical design ofthe Ransom and Ransom Demand. The Omen’s Capsule core is the first time Columbia has used the black Magnetite for the core and it also uses a new coverstock called Bend It. This cover is a dull finished pearl reactive. We found this ball to be a perfect match to our heavy oil pattern. The strong midlane and the continuous motion in the back end impressed all three testers. Even as oil carried down through the testing session, the Omen ignored it completely. All three testers were able to use the Omen at the box finish on this pattern. On the medium pattern both Tweener and Stroker were able to use the Omen at its box finish while Cranker raised the finish to a stair-stepped 4000 Abralon. Going through the 1000, 2000, and 3000 underneath the 4000 Abralon gave Cranker the added length needed to keep the Omen in the pocket on this pattern. As the pattern broke down, all three testers were able to make three and two adjustments and chase the oil inside. No matter how deep we moved, we never saw any labor in the back end or at the pins. On the dry test pattern, none of the testers could keep the Omen on the right side of the head pin. All three testers added a healthy glob of Powerhouse Factory finish polish to the test balls. This adjustment improved the Omen’s ability to get down the lane far enough, but hitting the pocket consistently was a bit difficult, especially for Cranker. The Omen is simply too strong for this type of pattern. We found the box finish to match up best to our sport pattern. All three testers were able to raise ball speed and overpower this lane condition, which is no easy task.
