Stärken: We loved the core/cover combination of this ball: A weaker reactive pearl, combined with a high RG core that flares less than two inches. This is what the doctor ordered for true dry lane conditions.
Schwächen: Since the Slingshot is so clean through the front, it will struggle on any decent volume of oil. Length and control are great on dry lanes but aren't what most bowlers are looking for on oily conditions.
Insgesamt: The Slingshot is the first ball from Brunswick in their Entry Level Performance line to offer a two-piece core design. The overall flare potential is very low but the core design allows for more drilling options, making this ball more user friendly compared to the Power Groove.
Comments: Very few companies design a true dry lane ball these days. Some have used a pancake weight block with a strong cover or a strong core with a weak cover. Both these combinations can have their problems for some styles on dry patterns. The Slingshot will be replacing what was considered to be Brunswick's dry lane ball, the Power Groove. The Slingshot combines their balloon shape core design with the PowrKoil 17 cover. It is no surprise that this ball got its highest rating on our dry test pattern. Cranker was playing the deepest of the three testers as usual. He was able to play between the third and fourth arrow, which is unusual for him due to his higher rev rate. Even Stroker and Tweener were able to play several boards closer to the gutter than they usually can on the dry test pattern. Stronger layouts will be needed for those bowling on patterns that are considered either medium or oily. The medium test pattern offered the best reaction for Cranker. His higher rev rate created enough friction for him to find the pocket. The other two testers had to be more careful where they started the Slingshot, due to their lower rev rates being unable to create enough turn to get this ball to make the corner consistently. Stay away from heavy volume patterns unless you have super slow ball speed. Even those with extremely high rev rates will have trouble on the slick stuff. The Slingshot wasn't enough ball for our sport pattern. Ours would be considered to be of medium volume, but as with any sport pattern, there isn't any mistake room wide of target. This ball would be better suited for drier sport patterns. Stick to drier lane conditions where the length and control will allow the ball to shine.
